music era approximately 1750-1820AD
music began around 1900 and continues to today. This Era of music is sometimes called the Modern Era or the Contemporary Era. The music of this era has moved away from the popular trends in music. One theme that has been suggested for this era is rebellion. Just about anything is possible in the music; any sound or no sound, complex rhythm or simple rhythm, complete control over formForm

is left completely up to chance.

Some composers in this era continue to write tonalTonal

music in traditional formsForms

such as the symphonySymphony

and concertoConcerto

. However, many composers chose to experiment and numerous new styles of music emerged. Some of the new styles are impressionismImpressionism
a compositional style which focuses on musical color
, atonalismAtonalism
a system of writing music not around a center tone
, serialismSerialism
a compositional style in which the composer puts elements such as rhythm, dynamics, pitch, and tone color in a fixed order
, and minimalismMinimalism
a compositional style which features little variation of short repeated melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic patterns
. Technology has also been influential over 20th century music. Many composers turned to the use of synthesizers to create new and different sounds and the use of computers to create precise music for film scores.
